The $25-million dollar project is a three-year study that will involve scientists and experts testing thousands of rats that will be fed varying diets of a Monsato genetically modified maize. They will also be involved with the most widely used herbicide which the maize is engineered to be grown with.
The study is called Factor NGO and will start fully next year. The co-founder of the Russian National Association for Genetic Safety (NAGS), Elena Sharoykina, is the coordinator of the study. She said that the experiment will try to establish whether false claims that GM maize and the herbicide results in cancers, reduced fertility, and birth defects.
I’m currently going through the preliminary documents of the study, and will have a more comprehensive outline by Monday. Sign up for email updates in the box on the right of this page.
