Enlist Duo is a new Dow AgroSciences version of the common 2,4-D weed killer. Farmers in some states will be able to use both the weed killer and recently approved GMO seeds. Despite some restrictions imposed by the Environmental Protection Agency, farmers will be able to use the weed killer with modified soybean and corn seeds.
The states that will initially be able to use Enlist are Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Ohio, South Dakota, and Wisconsin. The EPA is considering expanding the list to include an additional 10 states.
Under previous policy, Dow AgroSceince’s genetically modified seeds were only allowed to be used in closely monitored trials. Most seeds used in agriculture are already genetically modified to resist Monsanto’s weed killer Roundup, which was introduced in 1967.
